How to Secure Your Boarding Pass for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, the hot new ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios, is one of the hardest rides to get on at Walt Disney World. As most guests know, you can't just show up to Hollywood Studios expecting to hop right on the ride - it takes planning. Before we get into the steps it takes to secure that boarding pass, lets go over how it works.

Rise of the Resistance uses a virtual queue - instead of using a FastPass+ or waiting in the Standby line, guests join the virtual queue via the My Disney Experience App.

Guests are placed into a Boarding Group when they join the virtual queue. Instead of being given a specific time to return, your return time is determined by how quickly the ride cycles the guests in front of you in the virtual queue.

You can join the virtual queue at either 7 am or 1 pm (EST of course) via the My Disney Experience App. Yes, Hollywood Studios is not open at 7 am, but luckily guests are able to attempt to join from their hotel room or wherever they may be! If your attempt at 7 am is successful, you won't need to be there at rope drop and can simply wait for your return time.

Next, here are the basic steps to securing a boarding pass:

  1. Download the My Disney Experience App. Prior to your trip, make sure every member of your party has downloaded the My Disney Experience App and has connected their tickets to their account.

  2. Click on 'Rise of the Resistance - Access by Boarding Group." This banner is found on the main screen. Don't see the banner? Close and restart the app - sometimes a quick refresh will do the trick!

  3. Select "Join Boarding Group." This button will appear orange if Boarding Passes are still available, and gray if there is no more availability for the day.

  4. Select all of the members that you would like to add to the boarding group. Make sure all individuals are selected to guarantee all are placed in the same boarding group.

Now, this may seem easy, but as many guests know it's not that simple. Lets get into some helpful tips and tricks to help make sure you get lucky!

Do a speed test with both WiFi and cellular data before it's time to join the queue. At or above 70 Mbps should suffice, but at or above 100 Mbps is even better. You can click here to do a quick speed test.

Every second matters, and you need to be ready BEFORE the 7 am opening time. Make sure your phone is fully charged, fully updated and all of your apps are closed. Disney uses time.gov for opening the virtual queue, so double check the time on there against your watch. Launch the My Disney Experience App about 10-15 seconds before 7 am and hit the "Join Boarding Group" button. If that doesn't work, force-refresh by pulling down.

Do not try to get a boarding pass individually - everyone should be trying to get a boarding pass for everyone in your party. If you try individually, you won't end up in the same boarding group. Everyone who has a valid Disney Park Pass Reservation for Disney's Hollywood Studios for that day should already be pre-selected once you click "Join Boarding Group." If successful, whoever is the fastest in your group will score the boarding group while everyone else will receive a message that says "Not so Fast/Already in Boarding Group."

It doesn't hurt to do a test run or two with everyone at home before your trip. This way, everyone is comfortable with the app and the process, and you can make sure that no one forgets to add everyone in the group.

Don't get discouraged if you don't get a boarding pass the first time! There are so many people fighting for the same thing you are, and you won't always get lucky, but I have seen people more times than not get successful with these tips!

Do you have any other tips or tricks to getting a boarding pass? Have you gotten a chance to ride Rise of the Resistance yet?
